Ms. McDaniel was the first black performer to win the Oscar at the 1940 Academy Awards for her role as Mammy in Gone With the Wind. Ms. McDaniel bequeathed her Best Supporting Actress Award to Howard University in her Last, Will & Testament.
The Oscar vanished in the 60’s and The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences reissued that Oscar award to to Howard University in Washington, D.C. in a special ceremony on October 1st, 2023.
